Susanne’s Review:

Klara, I simply do not know how to express my love for you.

Though you are an AI, you are the epitome of what it means to be human.  Kind, caring, thoughtful, intuitive, insightful, observant, and benevolent, you are everything we should strive to be and more.

Klara is an AF, an Artificial Friend, chosen as a companion for Josie, who needs Klara by her side, in a myriad of ways. Though Klara, an AF, is not supposed to have feelings, she demonstrates a worldliness and a brilliance that shows that she has more emotion inside of her than anyone could ever imagine.

Klara gains strength and power from the sun and she believes that it can aid in more ways than one.  Those around her, gain strength and power from her and learn what humanity is all about.

To say that I adored this book, does not display more feelings for it.  There is affection, fondness, warmth, and then there is my attachment to Klara. What Kazuo Ishiguro has done here is simply astounding and makes me wonder why this is only the second book of his that I have read of his, the first being, Never Let Me Go.  What is even more astonishing is that I loved Never Let Me Go even more than this book, which seems impossible, and yet the character of Kathy has stayed with me in the years since I read that in 2012 and I’ve never forgotten her or that story.

A favorite to add to my Goodreads Best-of-list for 2021.
